It is time for another installment of book reviews! Gosh, there have been some great reads lately and I cannot wait to share about a couple of these books. A couple of these books are new releases from this fall and still in their infancy. Overall, I loved this batch of books I have read lately and think there is something for everyone! Don’t mind as I share these in my family Christmas pajamas! Read on for book reviews #2!
Book Reviews #2
The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin
Starting out on a strong note because this book ranks in my top five favorite books ever! An orthopedic surgeon and a journalist are strangers on a small flight when it crashes into the side of a mountain. The survival journey during the brutal months of winter, and a look into each of each of their separate personal lives opens up a dramatic plot and love story. I love the author’s writing style and descriptive wording. He even utilized medical terminology in an accurate fashion. While I do not recommend the movie based on this story, the book is a must read for fans of suspense and romance. Hands down, a five star review from me!
How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age by Dale Carnegie
This is an updated version to the original classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People, which was published in 1936. A lot of his information still reigns true from the original, however this brings in advice that is applicable in regards to technology utilized today, whether on the phone, emails, texts, etc… There are a lot of take-aways in this book, from a business and personal perspective. Improve listening, communication and leadership skills with Carnegie’s timeless advice and a new modern day application.
Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits by Reese Witherspoon
As a fan of Reese Witherspoon’s character and book club, I have been anticipating this book where Reese transitions to the writer’s seat. From talking about topics like southern hairstyles to equestrian transferware, this quick read gives a glimpse into Reese’s personal life. The book hops around frequently but gracefully, so because of that I would encourage you to buy the hardcopy rather than the audiobook. However both versions include several country-style recipes and photographs – the audiobook provides a separate 200+ page PDF. If you love Reese Witherspoon, the Draper James fashion line or the southern culture, you will enjoy this book. It’s a reminder that life is not perfect, but that all chapters in life need to be celebrated delightfully.
The Beauty of Dirty Skin by Dr. Whitney Bowe
If you are interested in skin care then you will love this book. The author is a dermatologist with a research background in microbiology. She breaks down the skin benefits of probiotics and a healthy diet, and gives specific recommendations to achieve your skin’s best “glow”. As someone in medicine I loved this book and its approach. Even if you do not have a medical background its written in a way that most can understand. Again, I would recommend the written version of this book, rather than the audiobook, because I found myself pausing the book frequently to write down her many tips. Overall an educational perspective on skincare from an expert!
LIKEtoKNOW.it: Stories from the Influencer Next Door by LIKEtoKNOW.it and influencers
LIKEtoKNOW.it put together over 100 stories from influencers, discussing how their background and how it led them to be a successful influencer today. Inside the book is a collection of beautiful photo spreads and collages, with about two pages dedicated to each influencer. I recommend this for someone who enjoys reading blogs or follows along in Instagram. It makes a nice coffee table book and discussion piece.
What have you been reading that you love?!
Live your life joyfully so,
