Hello and welcome back to the seasonal series covering everything in regards to the sun and your skin, Sunday Sun Day! Using my clinical background as a Physician Assistant, I want to protect you and your family from the dangers of UV radiation, while still allowing unlimited outdoor summer fun. Today, we answering the question, “Can a pill provide protection from the sun?” Also an sharing a colorful sundress option for the spring and summer seasons!
Q: Can a pill provide protection from the sun?
A: Yes. There is a pill that can provide protection from the sun and it is recommended by dermatologists!
Over the past few years there has been increased research on a plant-based pill that has proven to work well with traditional methods in protecting the skin from ultraviolet light damage. Polypodium leucotomos extract (aka PLE), derived from a fern native to South America, has been shown to protect the skin from harmful free radicals from the sun, both on a molecular and clinical level. Some of the benefits from this oral photo-protectant include a decrease in redness of the skin after sun exposure and fewer sun-burned cells. PLE can also help with other photosensitive conditions, like melasma.
This helpful extract can be found in once daily oral dietary supplements, such as Heliocare and Antioxidine. Both options are found over the counter, but just as a disclaimer always talk to your clinician before beginning supplements.
While this pill is beneficial it is not designed to replace traditional methods of sun protection. Ultimately the best protection from the sun is with sunscreen and avoiding it altogether, whether through shade or protective clothing, like hats or long sleeves.
To summarize, when used in conjunction with sunscreen and protective clothing, clinical studies suggest Polypodium leucotomos extract can provide another layer of protection from the sun!
Outfit details: I LOVE this sundress and it is perfect for the spring and summer seasons. On first look, the colors are so reminiscent of what summer is about: blue skies, sunshine and sunflowers. The fabric is flowy but flattering, which is important in warmer temperatures. This dress can be more expensive to purchase and rent, so there are a couple similar options here and here. I wore it once with yellow earrings (similar) and another with gold, both options are fun depending on occasion and the desired style.
Live your life joyfully so,
Ashley
