One place I have always been fascinated by is Banff, located in Alberta, Canada. The picturesque landscapes with mountains and turquoise blue lakes are something that resembles a Bob Ross painting. Within the town of Banff, the streets are lined with lush flowers, coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques and shops. Visiting Banff was a trip of a lifetime that I cannot recommend enough for those who yearn for nature or have an adventurous soul. Here are a few glimpses of Banff along with recommendations of our favorite restaurants, things to do and lodging in Banff.
Restaurants in Banff
Three Ravens Restaurant and Wine Bar
With exceptionally prepared entrees, each dish was a unique culinary experience. Dinner began with a fun cocktail menu, with both regional and international wine selections and craft cocktails. Bread and butter includes three chef-prepared butters and a pesto. We started off with a scallop appetizer and mushroom consommé. Both entrees, halibut and filet, were exceptional. If you love unique creations and sustainability, this restaurant is a win with a beautiful mountain view at sunset.
Sky Bistro
First item on the menu at the Sky Bistro is a trip up on the Banff Gondola with stunning views! Arrive early to walk the boardwalk. We enjoyed drinks and delicious entrees at 7,510 ft elevation. Schedule dinner 45 minutes before sunset and request a table with a view (we waited a little longer for a table along the window). I recommend making reservations as this is a Banff hot spot!
BeaverTails
If you have a sweet tooth, this is a Canadian treat! BeaverTail pastries are similar to a large, flat donut with your choice of toppings. Served hot, this was a rich and delicious end to our night!
Things to do in the Banff Area
Banff Gondola
If you are not afraid of heights, I recommend taking the Banff Gondola ride! Enjoy a ~10 minute ride to the summit of a mountain where there is a lookout station, boardwalk and incredible views. We did this before dinner at the Sky Bistro and both wish we had made more time to explore.
Visit Lake Louise
This glacier-fed lake with turquoise water is one of the most picturesque scenes that represents the Banff area. Around the lake is a trail filled with many areas to stop and take in the views. Sit outside at one of the Fairmount restaurants or rent a canoe to soak in the beautiful scenery. Lake Louise is about 45 minutes away from the town and Banff and parking can be tricky – we arrived very early in the morning to avoid taking the shuttle.
Go on a Hike
Some of our favorite memories were soaking up nature on a hike. We did the Plain of the Six Glaciers Trail on Lake Louise which had a cute tea house towards the top of the hike. For a little bit shorter hike, we loved the Grassi Lakes Trail. If you take this route, you have the option of an easy way up or a “more difficult” way. I recommend the more difficult way up for its waterfall and numerous views overlooking Canmore. Bow River in Banff, Lake Minnewanka and Lake Louise are also pretty areas to walk around if you aren’t up for a full hike.
Rent a Boat
Renting a canoe on Lake Louise is a great way to soak in the surroundings. The red canoes are famous for their stark contrast on the turquoise water at Lake Louise. The scenery is even more beautiful in person with the greenery and yellow brush creating magnificent views. Lake Minnewanka, a nearby glacier formed lake, also has rental options. They offer motor boats, kayaks and canoes at a much more affordable rate.
Where to Stay in Banff
As far as lodging, there are several great options in the town of Banff that offer close proximity to restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. We stayed at the Marriott in town which was sufficient, but both of us agree staying at the Fairmont Banff Springs or Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for at least one night is well worth the investment. Both Fairmonts have beautiful views and superb reviews.
Banff is definitely a place to remember and a trip we hope to do again soon. The views alone are the perfect escape to experience God’s beauty.
I am still riding on cloud nine after our trip, but have been taking full advantage of the Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale. Today is the second-to-last day of this bi-annual event to snag items at over 50% off, plus there were just new items added to the sale!
Live your life joyfully so,
Ashley
